There's something magical about going on small day trips with friends—the laughter, the spontaneous detours, and the shared experiences that create lasting memories. Recently, I invited one of mt TAFE friends and their partner on a trip with Bevan and myself and we embarked on an unforgettable journey around the Western side of Victoria, going through Halls Gap, Port Fairy, and the iconic 12 Apostles. It was a day filled with adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and, of course, great company.
Departure from Ballarat
Our journey began early in the morning as we left Ballarat, excited for the day ahead. The car was packed with snacks, a carefully curated playlist, and a sense of anticipation. There's something special about that first hour on the road—the crisp morning air and the heavy fog, the open highway, and the feeling of freedom that comes with it.

Exploring Halls Gap
Our first stop was Halls Gap, nestled in the heart of the Grampians National Park. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a stunning array of rugged mountain ranges and lush greenery. We decided to stretch our legs at one of the look outs called the Reeds, we would of gone to the Balconies but since we were on a tight schedule Reeds was the best spot to be.
The view from the top was worth bend in the road. Standing at Reeds look out, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. We took countless photos, capturing the beauty of nature and our exhilaration. Even Krypto jumped in the photos as well.

Picnic Lunch in Port Fairy
After our drive up the mountain, we continued our journey to Port Fairy, a charming coastal town known for its historic charm and picturesque beaches. We found a perfect spot for our picnic lunch at Griffiths Island, a short walk from the town center. The island is home to a historic lighthouse and offers stunning coastal views.
We spread out on one of the picnic tables, enjoying a delicious spread of sandwiches, fresh fruit, and homemade treats. The sound of waves crashing against the shore and the salty sea breeze made for a perfect backdrop. We spent some time just soaking in the atmosphere and stretching our legs before we drove through center of time on the way out.
Tower Hill
As the trip continued we made a sneaky detour through the one and only Tower Hill. An old volcano that is full of Australian wildlife and we got to witness a few people just randomly patting emus, so that was a first for everybody.

Marveling at the 12 Apostles and London Bridge
With all of us back on the road, the group headed towards one of Australia's most iconic landmarks—the 12 Apostles. The drive along the Great Ocean Road was nothing short of spectacular, with dramatic cliffs and ocean vistas at every turn.
Arriving at the 12 Apostles, we were awe-struck as always by the sheer magnificence of these limestone stacks rising majestically from the Southern Ocean. The viewing platform offered an unparalleled view, and between all the other visitors we were lucky enough to get a few group photos.

Just a short drive further along the coast, we visited the equally impressive London Bridge. Once a natural archway, the London Bridge has partially collapsed, creating a fascinating structure connected to the mainland. The history and dramatic collapse of the London Bridge add a layer of intrigue to its stunning beauty. As we stood there, taking in the breathtaking scenery, we couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the powerful forces of nature that shaped this landscape.
Return to Ballarat
As the day turned to dusk, we reluctantly began our journey back to Ballarat. The car was filled with silence and the occasional chatter about the day's highlights and a playlist of our favorite songs. The drive back was a perfect time to reflect on our adventures and the bond we shared as friends.
Conclusion
Traveling with friends is an experience like no other. It's about the shared moments, the laughter, and the collective memories that make the journey so special. Our road trip from Ballarat to Halls Gap, Port Fairy, and the 12 Apostles was a testament to the joy of exploration and the beauty of friendship.
If you're planning a road trip with friends, remember to embrace the spontaneity, take in the scenery, and most importantly, cherish the time spent together. After all, it's not just about the destination—it's about the journey and the people you share it with.
